Working in photography, production and mixed media, INDIA MARTIN is a visual artist and producer exploring social activism, culture and urban landscapes. She produces visual art and cultural experiences that transcend place and space by using strategies often found in Afro-surrealism. India’s interest in documenting urban landscapes and the people that traverse them comes from a desire to show people of color in conversation with the earth and a connection to natural surroundings. Her style of mixing textiles with photography comes from her interest in movement, the feel of materials and how certain colors, tones and textures call up specific emotional states and change how we interpret images.
India is currently a featured artist in the Chicago Transit Authority Lightbox art project where two of her photos are showing at the red line train station in downtown Chicago. From 2017-2018 she was an Artist-In-Residence in the Chicago Artist Coalition HATCH projects program and is currently an Artist-In-Residence in the 2019 Hyde Park Art Center -Center Program. Her work has been written about in publications such as Sixty Inches from Center, New City and Chicago Gallery News.
